Citizenship (Key Stage 3)

 

Year 7

What will pupils study this year?

Throughout the year the students will explore elements of their personal, social and health education. They will also nurture skills which will develop them as citizens of the UK and the wider world. The lessons are taught once a fortnight in a classroom environment. The curriculum works on a carousel with Religious education, therefore students complete half a year studying Citizenship before rotating to Religious Education. There will also be opportunities throughout the year for external visitors to provide specialist sessions.

 

 

 

 Term 1

 Topic 1: Personal Development 

 Students will begin the year by exploring the personal development. They will study the following topics:

  • Worries and concerns about secondary education.

  • Time management and homework

 Topic 2: Citizenship

 Students will learn about themselves as Citizens of the UK. Students will complete this unit by studying the following topics:

  • The importance of laws and leadership 
  • Voting and democracy

 Term 2

 Topic 3: Health and Wellbeing 

 Students will complete this unit by studying the following topics:

  • Smoking and the effects of smoking

  • The reasons why people take drugs 

  • Alcohol and binge drinking

  • Shisha and the problems it causes

  • Healthy eating

  • Puberty
  • LGBT

 External Visits

 During this year students will also take part in sessions that are delivered by external providers. This includes: 

  1. Greater Manchester Fire and Safety Team
  2. The School Nurse
  3. Oldham Road Safety Team

 

Year 8

What will pupils study this year?

  • The world of work

  • Gender stereotyping and careers

 Topic 2: Personal, Social, Moral and Cultural Development

 Students will complete this unit by studying the following topics:

  • Divided families and separation
  • Child abuse
  • LGBT

 Topic 3: Citizenship

 Students will complete this unit by studying the following topics:

  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • The role of the police
  • Staying safe on the street

 Term 2

 Topic 4: Personal Development 

 Students will complete this unit by studying Internet Safety and the problems of cyberbullying.

 Topic 5: Citizenship 

 Students will complete this unit by studying the following topics:

    • Rights and responsibilities

    • The role of the police

    • Staying safe on the street
 Topic 6: Social, Moral and Cultural Development

 Students will end the year by exploring how their lives/others are affected by poverty. They will study the following topics:

  • Rich and poor in Britain and the world

  • Fair trade
