Hathershaw Brings Matilda The Musical Jr to Life

Revoltingly Brilliant! Hathershaw College Students Triumph with Matilda The Musical Jr.

Hathershaw College students delighted audiences this November with a vibrant and heartfelt production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Jr., staged at Oldham Sixth Form College on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th November 2025.

Following the runaway success of last year’s Bugsy Malone, students from Years 7 to 11 once again proved their theatrical talent, filling the stage with colour, energy and confidence. Across two evening performances, audiences were transported into the world of Matilda Wormwood, as she and her classmates took on the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, celebrating imagination, courage and standing up for what’s right.

The production was directed by Mrs L. Lott, with choreography by Mrs L. Young, musical direction from Miss K. Dawson, and stage management by Mrs A. Jones. Together, the creative team guided a large cast through an ambitious and fast-paced musical, showcasing not only strong performances but also teamwork, resilience and professionalism.

Mrs Lott, Drama teacher and director, praised the students’ commitment and collaboration, saying:
“This year’s production of Matilda Jr. has brought together students from across the school who might never otherwise have met. The sense of teamwork, creativity, and resilience on display has been inspiring. It’s more than just a show — it’s a celebration of what our students can achieve when they’re given the opportunity to shine. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The performances were met with enthusiastic applause from families, staff and members of the local community, with many praising the students’ confidence, humour and stage presence. The decision to once again stage the show at Oldham Sixth Form College, part of the Pinnacle Learning Trust, reinforced Hathershaw’s strong commitment to the arts and to providing students with professional performance opportunities.

With Matilda The Musical Jr., Hathershaw College has delivered another unforgettable whole-school production, full of heart, humour and just the right amount of mischief, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating what the students will bring to the stage next.
