International Democracy Week 2015

International Democracy Week 2015

The week beginning 14th September saw International Democracy Week, with International Democracy Day falling on Tuesday 15th September, and here at The Hathershaw College we have been promoting and raising awareness of these occasions with our students.

During this week, assemblies were held to explain to students what a democracy is, where it came from and why it is important for them to vote when they are old enough (this can be downloaded opposite or below). Democracy will also play a part in their lives at the end of the month when all students will vote on who they would like to represent them on the Student Council, and who will become Head Boy and Head Girl of the school.

In May of this year, we held our first Mock Election in school where each of the five major parties were represented by student candidates, and ran a campaign alongside the General Election, with Tomi Akingbehin and Habiba Choudhury being elected for the Labour Party. Our local MP, Micahel Meacher also came into school in support of our campaign and to offer advice to candidates (pictures below).
