Mrs Easton retires after 33 years at Hathershaw

After 33 years at The Hathershaw College, Angela Easton, assistant principal, leaves at the end of the academic year, the only school she has ever worked at.  Angela herself acknowledges that this coming September will be a strange one having never failed to be in a school at the start of the autumn term since the age of 4.

Angela started working at the school in September 1992 as a teacher of home economics, what we now call food and nutrition.  Her aptitude for technology soon saw Angela take a radical change in direction to be an IT teacher and then very quickly Head of IT.  Many years later Angela became an advanced skills teacher, sharing her outstanding practice both within and beyond the school, before joining the senior team as an assistant principal, leading teaching and learning, curriculum and developing our digital strategy.

Angela has taught thousands of students over her time at school, she knows our families so well having taught the parents and a few grandparents of many of our children currently attending the school.  She is well known by our school community and for all the right reasons.  Angela cares passionately about young people, wants the very best for them, instilling high standards and never giving up on anyone.  Angela has always provided the same deal for other people’s children as she would have expected for her own.

Mark Giles, Hathershaw’s Principal said “Angela is an exceptional role model, teacher and leader.  Losing Angela to a well-deserved early retirement will be like losing at least two senior leaders such is her commitment and work ethic.  She has served our school and wider community exceptionally well over the last 33 years and it was fitting that we nominated her for a lifetime achievement award through the DfE backed Pearson Education Awards.  We are delighted, although not surprised, that her nomination was accepted.  I wish her and her family well for the future.”

Angela said “My 33 years at Hathershaw have been truly fulfilling, thanks to the unwavering investment from both the school and our Trust. Their commitment to delivering excellent educational opportunities for young people in Oldham and the local area aligns perfectly with my own values. This shared vision has been instrumental in my journey as a teacher and in fostering a long and happy career, working alongside so many wonderful colleagues, students and their parents.”

Oldham Council were also keen to mark the contribution that Angela has made to the town and have recorded this podcast chronicling her career.
