Hathershaw College Celebrates World Environment Day with Third Annual Sustainability Week
Hathershaw College in Oldham is proud to announce the successful completion of its third annual Sustainability Week, held from Monday 3rd June to Friday 7th June. Organised by the school's dedicated Eco Committee to celebrate World Environment Day, the eventful week engaged students and staff to work together in a variety of activities designed to raise awareness about climate change and encourage practices that contribute to a sustainable future.
Weeklong Highlights and Activities:
- Meat Free Monday: The canteen served vegetarian meals to encourage a plant-based diet, reducing carbon footprint.
- ‘No Idling’ Campaign: An initiative held outside the school gates promoting turning off car engines to prevent unnecessary air pollution.
- Waste Mountain Exhibit: A striking visual display outside of school, showcasing the volume of waste a school community can accumulate, urging better waste management and recycling.
- ‘Which Bin?’ Competition: A fun and educational contest held in the reception area, testing students' recycling knowledge.
- Water Aid Fundraiser Bake Sale: Students and staff baked and sold cakes, with all proceeds going to Water Aid, supporting global access to clean water.
- Eco Committee Litter Pick: The committee led a litter pick, cleaning up the school grounds and surrounding streets.
- Sustainability Pledge: A digital form was sent to all staff and students, encouraging them to commit to personal sustainability goals for the year.
Engaging the School Community:
Throughout the week, each subject incorporated a focus on sustainability or climate change into one lesson, ensuring that the message of environmental stewardship was echoed across all areas of study. Additionally, the school community was encouraged to adopt more sustainable commuting practices, like walking, using public transport, or car-sharing. Teachers were also encouraged to participate by utilizing natural light in classrooms where possible, minimizing electricity use.
Ongoing Commitments:
"Sustainability Week is a highlight of our school year and plays a crucial role in educating our future generations on the importance of environmental responsibility," said Lisa Lott, Sustainability Lead at Hathershaw College. "We are thrilled with the enthusiasm from our staff and students, particularly the Eco Committee, and we hope to inspire continued efforts towards a greener future."
The school looks forward to next year's Sustainability Week and ongoing eco-friendly initiatives that help to foster a caring and responsible school community.
