Transition
The transition of children from primary school to secondary school is a priority at Hathershaw. Our transition team work hard to ensure that students feel happy and safe about moving up from primary school. We have a full programme of transition communications with parents and the year 6 students joining us from the moment they find out they have a place with us.
We also have a transition day where students come and spend the day with us. Some students will receive additional transition if required. Communication is important to us and we encourage parents to contact us at any time if they have questions using the contact details below.

First Day Arrangements
School will begin on Tuesday 3rd September at 8.30am. Year 7 will be the only students in school on this day so that they can get to know the school before the other year groups return on Wednesday 4th September. Usually, Year 7 will spend the first hour of the day with Form Tutors, and will be provided with their timetables. The Year 7 Manager and Senior Leaders will be on hand to assist the students.
Uniform
The uniform is designed to be as low cost as possible and many items can be bought from most high street stores of supermarkets. However, we are aware of issues that parents sometimes face with the expense of buying school uniform, particularly if you have multiple children at school. If you are having difficulty financially, please contact us for support.
Find information about our school uniform here.

- A ruler
- Pencils
- A highlighter

The School Day
The school day begins at 8.30am. It is really important to get to school and lessons on time. To help you get to school on time, we offer all students a FREE breakfast from 8.10am. Expectations are that you arrive at 8:20am as Form period begins at 8.30am. This means that you must be sat in your form room at this time and not walking through the front door.
Find a full breakdown of the school day here.
Catering
Throughout their first year with us, Year 7 have their own canteen which is separate from other year groups. Here they can enjoy their lunch and break times alongside their own outdoor area with their peers. We have a Breakfast Café every morning, where students can enjoy free breakfast with their friends before they start they day. We have a cashless system in our canteens, and will provide you with information in due course, on how to set up your account and top up your child's balance. You can find more information about our catering here.
Music Provision
Hathershaw is one of 29 schools, one in three in the North of England, involved in the MiSST programme (Music in Secondary Schools Trust) which is supported by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Every student in Year 7-9 gets a musical instrument when they start at Hathershaw! Not only this, but pupils are taught by a professional and have the opportunity to participate in performances.
Parental support

There are many things to keep in mind during this time to help support your child in the best way. Here's some advice for parents who have a child starting secondary school this year, with tips on the emotional and practical sides of the transition.
